The Rules!

Since we have new people joining fairly frequently, here's our list of rules for how we manage this club, for reference!

How do we choose books?
When we have a setup meeting (because we've just run out of books off our previous list), members in good standing can put a book on the reading list. A member in good standing is one who attended AT LEAST THREE meetings in the previous 12 months (if you picked a book, you should of course plan to attend the meeting for your own book). So attendance is on a rolling basis for contributing a book to the next cycle. New for Cycle 6: we are filling out the year with some books that were nominated and voted on by the attendees at the setup meeting. This gives people who joined late in a cycle or who haven't otherwise been to at least three meetings have a chance to suggest titles for us to read.

What are the criteria for a book?
  • No religious texts.
  • As the person selecting the book, you can't select one you have already read (but if you've already read a book someone else selects, that's totally fine and you should definitely come to that meeting).
Once you've been around for awhile, you will pick up on which books tend to be more popular amongst members and which are less so. But it really doesn't matter. This club exists because people wanted to be introduced to new and different things!

What if I pick a book and everyone hates it?
This has happened to most of us and we all still like each other! No big deal! Because of the "you can't have read your book choice" clause, we sometimes do get fooled by book synopses or recommendations from outside sources and wind up with books most people end up disliking. But those have actually been some of our most fun and/or interesting club conversations!

Can I attend a meeting even if I didn't read/finish a book?
Absolutely, as long as you're ok hearing about spoilers!

When and where do we meet?
When this club was set up, we determined that the last Sunday of each month seemed to work best for most people, and typically in mid-late morning. Usually, we try to meet at the home of the person whose book we're discussing, but if that person can't or doesn't want to host for whatever reason, we have Miriam's, Sarah's, or Jessy's houses as backup. If you want to request a different time or day, that's totally fine! Just text Miriam.

Tl;Dr: This club meets on the last Sunday of the month, usually at 10 or 11am, at the book-selector's house.

If, after reading this, you still have questions, text or email Miriam, Sarah, or Jessy!
